COCA Corpus
Sketch Engine
Collocation

[WSJ] What’s Wrong With Starbucks?
Even before retirement gave him more time to linger in cafes, Starbucks was Dan Palmer’s go-to. Breakfast there seemed healthier than fast food, he said, and he could sample a wider range of beverages, like the mango dragonfruit refresher that became his drink of choice. Except that each cup now costs him more than $6. “The prices have gone up—a lot,” said Palmer, 66, who lives in the Chicago suburbs. “It’s not a deal in any sense of the word.”
Most U.S. customers now order their drinks to-go, or via drive-throughs, never lingering inside the chain’s carefully curated stores.
The chain is credited with introducing Chinese consumers to coffee and cafe culture after it entered the country in 1999, but two decades later things have changed. New and nimble Chinese chains like Luckin and Cotti have rapidly chipped at Starbucks’s market share in the world’s second-most-populous nation.

[NBC] Senate to push forward with child online safety bills this week
In recent months, Schumer had tried to move the bipartisan online safety bills to the Senate floor by unanimous consent, but some senators blocked those efforts with objections.

[WSJ] Kim Jong Un Wants to Block All North Koreans From Escaping. It Isn’t Working.
A military defection pierces Kim’s hopes of presenting North Korea as a powerful country and socialist paradise. The regime is sustained by a tight control on information, blind loyalty from the military and nuclear advances that deter a potential invasion. North Korea remains largely isolated from the outside world, with the exception of allies such as Russia and China. North Korean soldiers face harsh conditions in the military.
“The border barriers are proof that the Kim regime is aware of internal discontent and wants to block defections,” said Kang, who is now a political science professor at South Korea’s Dong-A University.
Many North Koreans used to flee through China, crossing the border with help from brokers. But during the pandemic, new fences and watchtowers were installed to expand surveillance.

[NYT] How the Kids Online Safety Act Was Dragged Into a Political War
The legislation would require social media platforms and other sites to limit features that can heighten cyberbullying, harassment and the glorification of self-harm. The bill would also require tech companies to turn on the highest privacy and safety settings for users under 17 and let them opt out of some features that have been shown to lead to compulsive use.
